THE ANARCHY

At the end of 1135, Henry I, King of England, died unexpectedly, leaving no male heir to reign in his stead. Henry's daughter, Empress Matilda, believed she should rule by succession. However, the late king's favorite nephew, Stephen de Blois ("blue-a"), was quicker to the throne, and with the help of his brother, the Bishop of Winchester, was crowned king. Those loyal to the empress were enraged by Stephen's coronation and would not accept him as their new ruler. Over the next eighteen years, England saw a breakdown in law and order as civil war spread throughout the country. This conflict came to be known as "The Anarchy"... In The Anarchy, players take on the role of English nobles loyal to King Stephen. Over five rounds, players must build their domain, defend their castle from attacks by the approaching Angevin armies, and storm strongholds loyal to Matilda with their own crafted siege weapons. The player who can accumulate the most bravery, loyalty, influence, and might, while avoiding discontent, will prove to King Stephen they are his most loyal ally, thereby earning his largest earldom.

KOMODO

In the strategic tile-laying game Komodo, players are zoologists attempting to build new habitats for Australasian animals imperilled by an incoming asteroid. Each player holds two animal cards stating the type and amount of terrain needed, five multi-terrain tiles, and wild cards. On a turn, they may lay up to three tiles, place one or both of their animals in free-form contiguous blocks of appropriate terrain, and use all or some of their wild cards. The starter tile has two blocks of each of the four terrain types: forest, grassland, desert and water. The number of blocks of terrain needed by an animal is equivalent to the number of points you can score by placing it. When the tile supply is exhausted, each player takes a final turn, then loses points for any unplaced animals still in hand. The player with the highest score wins. Komodo can be played competitively in both basic or strategic mode. In the former, wild cards are obtained randomly; in the latter, players can choose their wild cards. Actions permitted by a wild card include: releasing animals to free up their terrain; bartering or stealing terrain tiles; remodeling tiles already placed; and forcing an exchange of animals. In the cooperative version of Komodo, all 32 animals must be housed and each player must place at least one animal during their turn. The game is played open-handed, and the wild cards hinder the players.   2-4 players Age 8+ Average Game Time: 45 minutes

MANIFEST

It's the roaring '20s and there's a fortune to be made steaming across the wild oceans. To succeed, you'll need a captain's steady nerve and the help of Lady Luck to land your cargo where it's needed. You have ships full of passengers and precious cargo, but can you outrun pirate robbers, terrifying storms and a stock market crash that might devalue your goods? Manifest is a game of cargo ships, sea scoundrels, and nautical mayhem. Win points for your shipping company by completing Contracts. Pick up the required goods or passengers at their source, then navigate the high seas to deliver them to their destination. With a choice of private and public contracts and multi-purpose action cards, there are many paths to victory, and some "take that" options to make sure your opponents don't steal the limelight. Manifest can be played in two ways: Standard and Expert. The Standard game is the introductory and family game. The Expert game builds on this, with a deck-buying and building mechanism replacing the blind card draw, thus adding another level of strategy that confident players may prefer.   Players: 2-4 Age: 13+ Playing Time: 45-90 Mins

GLIMSTONE GRAB!

Every man, woman, and beast is after the magical Glimstones in this cooperative game Glimstone Grab is set in the magical universe of our bestselling game, Hoard. Esmeralda and her friend, Wizard Widdershins, must save the town of Much Middling from a clutch of rapacious trolls who have settled into a clearing in the forest, where they are helping themselves not just to the gems, but the local children! Players take turns revealing and actioning event cards, then using movement cards to circle the two heroes around the forest, collecting gems. When they meet up, if they have the right gems between them, they can perform a spell and banish a troll. Banish all the trolls to win, but keep an eye on the children. If they are all captured at the end of anyone's turn, the players lose. Thankfully, the magic of the Glimstones can be harnessed to rescue children, but this does take gems out of circulation. It is also possible to lose if there are no meeting places left. The game can be set up for a beginner, intermediate, or hard game, but players can also make their own custom setting by selecting event cards to use and changing other variables. 2-4 Players Ages: 8+ Playing Time: 10-30 mins

RAID THE PANTRY

In the cooking-themed card game Raid the Pantry, for 2-4 individuals or two teams of two, players are dealt ingredient and dish cards at the start of play; over the course of the game, players need to collect the ingredients needed to make the dishes in hand. Each completed dish scores you 1-3 points, locks in its ingredients for reuse in other dishes, and allows you to take a new dish card. Action cards, drawn at the beginning of a turn, provide ways to add, lose, trade and retrieve ingredient cards. The eight "Instant Dishes" among the action cards allow players to lock in a common ingredient and score 1 point. Players can score a "cuisine bonus" for making multiple dishes from one of the five primary cuisines featured on dish cards (American, Continental, French, Italian and Mexican). The first player to reach a point threshold, which depends on the number of players, wins. In the team version, players end the round and total their points when the Action card deck has been exhausted. Raid the Pantry is the winner of the New Zealand New Game of the Year 2013 award from the New Zealand Games Association. It also won a Game of the Year 2013 award from Creative Child Magazine and one of first ever "Recommended by American Mensa" commendations.
