KOMODO

In the strategic tile-laying game Komodo, players are zoologists attempting to build new habitats for Australasian animals imperilled by an incoming asteroid. Each player holds two animal cards stating the type and amount of terrain needed, five multi-terrain tiles, and wild cards. On a turn, they may lay up to three tiles, place one or both of their animals in free-form contiguous blocks of appropriate terrain, and use all or some of their wild cards. The starter tile has two blocks of each of the four terrain types: forest, grassland, desert and water. The number of blocks of terrain needed by an animal is equivalent to the number of points you can score by placing it. When the tile supply is exhausted, each player takes a final turn, then loses points for any unplaced animals still in hand. The player with the highest score wins. Komodo can be played competitively in both basic or strategic mode. In the former, wild cards are obtained randomly; in the latter, players can choose their wild cards. Actions permitted by a wild card include: releasing animals to free up their terrain; bartering or stealing terrain tiles; remodeling tiles already placed; and forcing an exchange of animals. In the cooperative version of Komodo, all 32 animals must be housed and each player must place at least one animal during their turn. The game is played open-handed, and the wild cards hinder the players.   2-4 players Age 8+ Average Game Time: 45 minutes

RETURN TO DARK TOWER

For an age, the tower lay in ruins. Unbeknownst to the people of the realm, a great evil stirred in its bowels. It started with strange sightings: a flock of crows flying in circles until they dropped from the sky, the lake frozen solid in the height of summer. In time, they could not deny that which they most feared. The evil had not been vanquished. The darkness would soon fall again. The tower will rise. A "sequel" to the 1981 grail game, Return to Dark Tower is a game for 1-4 players who take the role of heroes. Together, they gather resources, cleanse buildings, defeat monsters, and undertake quests to build up their strength and discern what foe ultimately awaits them. When the heroes face the tower, the game shifts into its dramatic second act, where the players have one chance to defeat the enemy once and for all. The game features both cooperative and competitive modes of play. The game features traditional game mechanisms, such as engine building and resource management, paired with a technological interface unlike any seen before in games, including the titular tower, which holds more than a few secrets.Players: 1-4 Ages: 10+ Playing Time: 100-120 minsAwards & Honors2023 American Tabletop Strategy Games Recommended2022 Meeples Choice Award Nominee2022 Golden Geek Most Innovative Board Game Nominee2022 Golden Geek Best Thematic Board Game Nominee2022 Golden Geek Best Cooperative Game Winner2022 Golden Geek Best Cooperative Game Nominee2022 Golden Geek Best Board Game Artwork & Presentation Nominee2022 Dragon Awards Best Science Fiction or Fantasy Board Game Nominee2022 Board Game Quest Awards Game of the Year Nominee2022 Board Game Quest Awards Best Thematic Game Winner2022 Board Game Quest Awards Best Thematic Game Nominee2022 Board Game Quest Awards Best Reprint/Reimplementation Winner2022 Board Game Quest Awards Best Reprint/Reimplementation Nominee2022 Board Game Quest Awards Best Production Values Nominee

PANDEMIC: RISING TIDE

It is the dawn of the Industrial Age in the Netherlands. For centuries, the country has relied upon a series of dikes and wind-powered pumps to keep it safe from the constant threat of flooding from the North Sea, but this system is no longer enough. In Pandemic: Rising Tide, it is your goal to avert tragedy by constructing four modern hydraulic structures in strategic locations that will help you defend the country from being reclaimed by the ocean. Storms are brewing and the seas are restless. It will take all your guile to control the flow of water long enough to usher in the future of the Netherlands. It's time to get to work. Containing the water that threatens to consume the countryside is your greatest challenge. Water levels in a region are represented by cubes, and as the water containment systems currently in place begin to fail, more water cubes are added to the board. With water levels constantly on the rise, failure to maintain the containment system could quickly lead to water spilling across the board. To successfully build the four hydraulic structures needed to win a game of Pandemic: Rising Tide, you must first learn to predict and manipulate the flow of water. Failing to maintain safe water levels throughout the country can bring you perilously close to failing your mission. Fortunately, water can be corralled by a strategically placed dike or slowed by pumping water out of a region. Correctly identifying and intervening in at-risk areas can get you one step closer to victory. 2-5 playersAges 8 to adult45 minutes playing time

AUZTRALIA

AuZtralia is an adventure/exploration game for 1-4 players set in an alternate reality 1930s. The theme is inspired by Martin Wallace's A Study in Emerald. Following the Restorationist war, the northern hemisphere lands lay poisoned and starvation was the norm. Intrepid adventurers set out to explore and settle new lands. Little did they know, after the war, the surviving Old Ones and their remaining loyal human armies made their way to the outback of Australia to lick their wounds. Build a port, construct railways, mine and farm for food. You’ll need to prepare for the awakening. You’ll need to fight. Everything you do in the game costs time, which is one of AuZtralia's most valued resources. At a point in time, the Old Ones will wake up and become an active player. They begin to reveal themselves and move, with potentially devastating outcomes. You’ll need to prepare wisely for the awakening and may have to co-operate with others to defeat the most dangerous Old Ones. Military units will help you to locate, fight and defend against the nightmarish beings that may be lurking on your doorstep. As well as hardware, you’ll need to recruit some Personalities who have the skills and resources to help you. Riches from the land, mixed with darkness and insanity await you in the outback. Will humanity prevail or will the Old Ones wreak their revenge? By default, the game is semi-cooperative, where one wins or everyone loses. The rulebook includes a fully cooperative variant. 1-4 Players Age 13+ 30-120 minutes

LEGENDARY CREATURES

There is a great buzz of excitement throughout the halls of Kajan, the School of Life, as the High Council has announced a Trial of Nature’s Grace! When a group of apprentices show sufficient promise, a Trial is called. Over a period of three days the apprentices racing through the realms attempting to earn renown in the minds of their teachers, but most importantly in the eyes of the fantastic creatures. Each student is given an Amulet, allowed the same three spells, and start their travels with an identical group of creatures who aid them with magical energy and fantastic abilities. The objective of Legendary Creatures is to win the trial and advance to the rank of Druid. Players do this with the aid of fantastic creatures who assist them in their quest for renown, whatever form it may take. An apprentice’s final rank in each elemental realm, renown earned through great feats, and expeditions to distant landmarks determines who becomes the next Druid! Legendary Creatures is played over three days, each of which consists of AM, Afternoon, and PM turns. Players draw 4 creatures from their individual decks, then play 3 into their stable and send one on a solo expedition. Order and types of creatures determine initiative and resource generation for the round. Players then take turns selecting the realm they'd like to travel in, the resources they generate, and the spells they cast. This is repeated each portion of the day with a final expedition at the end of the PM portion. Ultimate leadership in each realm and via their expeditions reward victory points to determine the winner.

NEMETON

Under a vile curse, the forest is slowly dying. A few druids, last guardians of this green and endangered kingdom, answer the call of the helpless animals. Save the forest and become its protector! In Nemeton, you have ten moons (ten turns) to explore the forest, create new potions, and summon the spirit of animals to earn as many reputation points as possible. A player's turn has four phases — night, dawn, day, and dusk — then the next player takes their turn. At night, the druid summons the power of the moon to grow sacred plant essences in the forest. The player adds a “Forest” tile to the existing forest on the “Moon” side. Once the tile is placed, the player checks if he can link it in a straight line with another “Forest” tile of the same type (river, clearing, rock or earth), in any direction. The player then places the resources of a certain type on the activated tiles. At dawn, the player turns over the "Forest" tile he just placed on the "Day" side. He can now discover a path leading to a sacred place: an Oak, a spring, or a Nemeton. If it’s the case, the player picks the corresponding "Sacred place" tile in the reserve and adds it to the forest by connecting it to the tile he just added. By day, the player will move the druid to take the proper course of action depending on the "Forest" tiles on which he is walking: gathering all the resources on a simple tile, creating potions with those resources near a Nemeton, or earning the trust of animals.Exploring the forest isn’t easy. When moving forward, a druid can use a power to take winding paths and change directions or enjoy a boost in movements that go in a straight line. However, the player will have to choose between resting and getting back the power to move forward or getting a triskel to earn more points. If he wishes, the druid can use a sacred plant, the archangel plant, to turn into a crow and to fly to any "Oak" tile on the board. He can summon the spirit of an animal to obtain its special powers and then use them during a special move (swap a resource, find a shortcut, etc.) At dusk, if the druid helped to heal the forest by successfully doing virtuous deeds, he puts his token on the accomplished goal, giving him one more resource as well as bonus points at the end of the game if he is the first of the players to do so. Once his turn is over, it‘s the turn of the next player until all players have laid down their 10 "Forest" tiles. Then the players must count their reputation points:Each potion gives the points indicated on the card. The goals show the number of points given. The animals give points depending on the different streaks. Each triskel gives two points. The player with the most reputation points wins the game.
